Contentious ethical issues in recent times have centred on aspects of human rights, including discrimination on the basis of sex, sexual preference or race, euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research and human cloning, as well as the freedom of religion. Too often these issues have been dealt with poorly by governments, as individual rights, scientific argument, rational thinking and ethical action has been neglected or obscured in public debate.
